Living : Life Style

Living an eco-friendly life

There is a myth that has been around forever that suggests living an eco-friendly lifestyle is expensive. The truth is that some ‘shop bought’ items that are labelled ‘green’, ‘eco-friendly’ or ‘organic’ certainly do have an increased price tag from the ‘standard’, highly processed till there’s nothing of value left in them, chemical laden items, but do you have to purchase those to be eco-friendly? In a lot of circumstances, no, you don’t. Many ways of eco-friendly living are more sustainable if you make them yourself so you know exactly what is used to produce them and where it came from, making them not only a very sustainable option, but also a very economical one too.

Keep Breathing this Summer: Protecting your Lungs Around Forest Fire Smoke

From warm and sunny Calgary, I am watching the forest fire season this year with concern.  As a naturopathic doctor who practices family and environmental medicine, I know that smoke from large forest fires can travel hundreds or thousands of kilometers from its source, affecting air quality and contributing to symptoms in vulnerable patients. Local weather patterns can also serve to trap smoke and pollution close to the ground, creating areas

Delicious Bug Repellents

Summer is a wonderful time of year with its wall to wall sunshine and wide open spaces ready to explore, but as we become more active and get out and about having fun, so do the insects! Being vigilant against biting insects is a must but the chemical industry has settled on only one real option – DEET. DEET is diethyltoluamide, a 100% man made chemical that is extremely destructive on everything it touches, not just mosquitoes. Long term

Organic Oil Pulling – A Barry Manilow Experiment

During my youth and young adulthood, Barry Manilow was a huge organic phenomenon (OK, so I lied. He’s not organic). Droves of middle aged women flocked to concerts, requested all his songs at every karaoke (yes, it was cool when I was young) and he appeared all over media, raised to the lofty status of ‘Uber Star’ by his army of middle aged women fans. He even reached the infamy of being the person who had the most sexy knickers thrown at

Since the early days of modern

I’m pretty sure that you and I have one thing in common; the only thing we’ve done with our urine is either flushed it – or passed a small amount of it to a nurse or lab technician to find out what was wrong with us. Shocker! Urine is not something you really want to mess with, well, at least not you or I, but other people have! Here are some ways people have used urine for green, natural or not so eco-friendly

Meditation – You, Unplugged.

As 2013 drew to a close, I found myself feeling reflective. The year had been difficult for my family. My husband, who had been diagnosed with cancer the previous year, had just endured yet another surgery, and my daughter was emotionally and physically exhausted from a two-year battle with a serious illness. I admit, I was feeling exhausted myself. The illnesses plaguing my husband and daughter required frequent hospitalizations, which often
