Wild Wind Energy
For centuries we have harnessed the wind to power many different machines, and also let’s face it, windmills in Holland look so much prettier then those smog emitting factories.
Windmills are large towers with giant blades, usually a hundred or more feet above the ground, this way it can catch the faster moving air so it can harness more electricity. Most windmills are usually perched on top of a hill which makes it higher so it can catch more wind which leads to more power, or in vast flat areas where the wind blows un challenged and builds up speed and power.
One blade of a windmill acts much like an airplane wing. When the wind blows, a pocket of low-pressure air forms on the downwind side of the blade. The low-pressure air pocket then pulls the blade toward it, causing the rotor to turn. This is called lift. The force of the lift is actually much stronger than the wind’s force against the front side of the blade, which is called drag. The combination of lift and drag causes the rotor to spin like a propeller, and the turning shaft spins a generator to make electricity. The electricity made is cheaper and has no pollution emitted. This way it is more efficient to build windmills that can harness cleaner power and more efficient power.
To modernize the windmill, wind turbines have been designed. Wind turbines can be used as stand-alone generators, or they can be connected to a utility power grid or even combined with a photovoltaic (solar cell) system. For utility-scale sources of wind energy, a large number of wind turbines are usually built close together to form a wind plant. Several electricity providers today use wind plants to supply power to their customers.
Stand-alone turbines are used mainly for communications and water pumping. Sometime on ranches or farms, the farmers use windmills to create energy and electricity to help reduce the cost of the electricity bills. They can be placed almost anywhere and operate under nearly all wind conditions. They have been proven safe to use and are hard wearing. They are simple in design and construction and need very little manpower to operate and control. They are a true solution to the energy crises that has been detrimental to the economy, and also the health of the planet.
We all have seen those gross power plants with the black smog and churning noises, that is not good for the environment, using wind turbines is not only scenic, and makes the countryside looks amazing, but it is also a great renewable energy source, that is cleaner and safer for everyone.
